Monday, November 11th, was certainly a WICKED return to the office for Mattel corporate officials. Over the weekend, news began to spread that Mattel’s latest line of dolls for the Universal Pictures movie, Wicked, had hit shelves with a WICKED mistake.
The entire doll collection features a URL on the bottom of the box intended to direct consumers to the official movie site, www.wickedmovie.com. However, the URL mistakenly reads www.wicked.com, which leads to an adult film site boasting “Over 6,000+ Scenes of Wicked Porn.”
Mattel’s official statement reads: “Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked doll collection, primarily sold in the U.S. The misprint was on the URL intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page. We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy the situation.”
Mattel issued a statement to retailers on Sunday, November 10, to pull all dolls from shelves until further instructions were provided in an effort to get ahead of the chaos. Retail stores such as Kohl’s obfuscated the incorrect URL and continued selling the dolls at select locations, however, dolls featuring the non-redacted www.wicked.com URL were still reported as being purchased from various Kohl’s locations on Tuesday, November 12.
Retailer, Walmart, pulled all of the dolls from their website on Monday, and shoppers flocking to stores to purchase a piece of pop culture lore faced retail-woes at the register, as cashiers confiscated the dolls once scanning the dolls returned a stop-sale message, indicating that these dolls could not be sold and should be taken off of the sales floor.
Collectors and resellers alike flocked to stores on Monday in an attempt to score the now-recalled dolls before stores pulled them from shelves.
On Monday evening, an entire set of the now-recalled dolls sold on eBay for a whopping $2,000 USD. Retail pricing for the dolls was $24.97 for the regular edition and $39.97 for the deluxe edition.
The lucky eBay seller pictured (right) spent around $350 USD on the complete collection and resold the dolls for $2,000; after taking into account eBay fees and shipping, that’s around a 380% return. You can view current and sold eBay listings for the now-recalled dolls below:
